She is now almost 20 months and has always had a plate. We did go through the plate on the floor phase in the beginning but just stared pre-empting the throw and put a hand on the plate and asked if she was finished. If she threw it again we would take the plate and food away. She wouldn't throw if she was concentrating on eating so it was an easy decision to take it away IYKWIM because she had obviously had enough to eat. You can get suction plates to help with this problem. wink
We started the back on your plate thing way back near the beginning as well, she started BLW at 6.5 months so it may have been about 9 months that we started reminding her where to put it if she didn't want it. We did hand over hand her in the early days as well as tapping the plate so she understood what we meant.
By hand over hand I mean using your hand to move child's hand so they get the idea. We also use Makaton sign so she understood there was a purpose to hand signals.[/quote]
Ah suction plates sounds like a great idea! When you say you reminded her where to put it, where did she put the food when finished with it?
Thanks! :-)
